HostGator FTP – Manage FTP Accounts



FTP is a file transfer protocol. When you create an account with a hosting company, you will get a FTP account along with that. This FTP account is used to transfer files from your desktop to the server or your hostgator account.

When you sign up with HostGator, your default FTP account is the same as your cPanel username and FTP password is same as cPanel password. This is the master FTP account. You can access all your HostGator account’s files using this FTP account.

You can also create a new FTP user account in HostGator. Here are the steps using which you can create new hostgator FTP user.

1) Login to HostGator cPanel using your username and password.

2) Scroll down to Files section and go to FTP Accounts button.

3) Here you can create a new FTP username. Enter the FTP username which you want to create. Enter the password and re-enter the password. Select the directory for which you want the FTP user to have access. 

4) Once all details are filled up, click on Create FTP Account button.

That’s it. Now your new FTP account is create.

Please note that this FTP account can only access the directory for which an access has been granted.
If you made mistake in creating the FTP username then don’t worry. You have an option to delete the FTP username.

When you open the FTP accounts section, you will see a list of already created FTP users. Just click on delete button. It will ask to delete just the username or username and all related files. Just select the option which you prefer and done.
